A heavy windstorm on Wednesday brought down one of the pillars holding the floodlights of the terrace building (K) inside the dilapidated National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The windstorm, which came along a heavy downpour, saw the weak pillar holding the floodlights cutting off from the middle and landed on the empty space and in the process destroying all the floodlights.
Although no life or injury was recorded, people attributed the incident to the long neglect of the facility, which was commissioned in 1972 under the military administration of Gen. Yakubu Gowon.
So many Nigerians had in time past expressed concern about the poor state of the stadium, but nothing was done to maintain the facility.
The Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, had sometime recently came up with the idea of public-private sector participation in the repair of the stadium, but apart from the main bowl and the tartan track, which were being repaired, nothing so far, has been done at the stadium.
Some concerned Nigerians have expressed fears that if nothing was done to repair the stadium, it might collapse any time soon, even as they called on the Federal Government to take urgent action before more havoc is recorded at the stadium.
