Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti finally regained his freedom from the Police detention, on Tuesday night, even after perfecting his bail conditions since last Thursday.

His release was confirmed by his Counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, in a telephone chat with journalists on Tuesday night.

“Yes, Ṣeun Kuti was released minutes ago,” he said.

Earlier, the Chief Magistrate, Adeola Olatunbosun, had extended Kuti’s remand until Tuesday, May 23.

According to a Court document, the Chief Magistrates last week Thursday granted an application by the Police for an extension of remand of Seun Kuti until Tuesday (today).

The extension was meant to enable the Police conclude its investigation, and obtain the advice of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP.

The police had told the court that the two days remand extension earlier granted was not enough for it to conclude its investigation.

Responding to the application, the Magistrate said, “I will grant the extension. Matter adjourned to May 23, 2023, for DPP’s advice,” the document revealed.

However, Tuesday’s hearing of the alleged assault case against the Afrobeat musician was stalled due to the absence of the Chief Magistrates.

NigeriaCheck Newspaper gathered that the Chief Magistrate, who had last week adjourned the hearing to today, was attending a workshop.

The singer has been in detention since May 15, for assaulting a police officer two days earlier on the Third Mainland Bridge, prompting the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to order his arrest.

The musician had turned himself in at the Police Command, Ikeja, in the company of his lawyers and family representatives, and was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, where he was eventually detained.
