NBA-SBL Begins 17th Annual International Business Law Conference July 5 To 7

The Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Business Law, NBA-SBL, says all is now set to kick-start its 17th Annual International Business Law Conference, scheduled for between July 5 and 7 at the Eko Hotel and Suites, in Lagos.

Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee and Treasurer of the Council, Mrs Ayoyinka Olajide-Awosedo disclosed this at a news briefing on Wednesday.

Olajide-Awosedo said one of the objectives of the conference, which was themed: “The Nigeria Business Landscape- Priorities of Law, Policy and Regulation,” was to set an agenda on how to revive the economy owing to the new government in place.

Her words: ” The conference will also focus on what regulations are pertinent to revive our economy in order to encourage investors to attract talents.

“As lawyers, there are plethora of laws that .affect the economy and so we want to sit in the room with all the relevant stakeholders, industries regulators, policies makers and look at how to move our economy forward.

“Looking at the impact of technology, we will look on how Nigeria can peg herself with the developed countries.

“Outside of the sessions and networking opportunities, we have regulatory clinic and we will be sponsoring 25 young lawyers to attend the conference.”

Olajide-Awosedo also noted that the conference aimed at exploring recent developments in the Nigerian business law environment, how it had affected businesses and what needed to be done to help businesses thrive.

According to her, numerous activities had been set aside to grace the annual conference among which was “lawyers got talent competition” and the winner would get cash price.

She added that the conference provided a platform for stakeholders in the Nigerian business environment to address the issues that affected the business environment and by extension, businesses operating in it.

On his part, Chairman of SBL, Dr Adeoye Adefulu, said the council had keen interest and has made various landmark successes in developing the economy of the country.

Adefulu, in his address, said experts from the public and private sectors, business lawyers and other stakeholders in the business law environment would converge to discuss how the regulations of the economic sector would be revived.

“We have a regular regulatory interventions we shall be working with and we have also arranged internships programmes for lawyers with regulatory agencies as well,” he said.

Also, Chairman, Program and Content Sub-Committee, Mr Oludare Sembore, said the Lagos State Governor, Babajide SanwoOlu, would be the special guest of honor and chief host while many other dignitaries around the world in the economy sector would also grace conference.

“The NBA President, Mr Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, and other senior member of the legal profession will also be in attendance.

“Other senior members of the bar, the bench and the chief economist from KPMG will also be in attendance.

“We shall also be having international speakers such as Dr. Folashade Adeyemo, an Assistant Professor in University of Liverpool and Dr. Timi Popoola, the Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Ltd are also part of the panelists,” he said.

Sembore added that the conference would also focus on issues relating to agriculture, business, entertainment and the likes.

NBA-SBL had remained a converging point for decision makers in both the public and private sectors, policy formulators, regulators and industry practitioners seeking solutions to the myriad challenges limiting businesses, since its inception in 2004.
