Lagos CJ Petitioned Over Man In Kirikiri Prison For Over 6yrs Without Trial

Know Your Rights for Justice, KnoRights, a non- governmental organization, has petitioned the Chief Judge of Lagos, Justice Kazeem Alogba, over the non- reassignment of a case file number CR/MISC/W/34/17 between the Commissioner of Police and one, Mr. Ayo Aremu, for the past 6years.

The rights group, in the letter dated 28 March, 2023 and made available to NigeriaCheck Newspaper by its Chairman & Lead Activist, Comrade Olusegun Adeeko, urged the Chief Judge to intervene in the reassignment of charge no: CR/MISC/W/34/17 to enable either the Office of the Public Defender, OPD, or the Legal Aid Council, LAC, represent Mr. Aremu, who is now spending over 6years in the Kirikiri Maximum Prison without any trial.

The wording of petition reads: “We have written the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, DPP, seeking for it’s legal advice on the subject matter dated 25th January 2022.

“KnoRights had also written a petition to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID Panti, Yaba, to locate the Court, where the criminal case file was located and we were told to go to Magistrate Court 1.

“We approached the Prosecutor of Ogba Magistrate Court 1, who admitted the case file was in his possession till date, but failed to reassign the case file for adjudication.

“We went further to seek the assistance of the Office of the Public Defender, OPD, and the Legal Aid Council, LAC.

“Sir, in view of the above, KnoRights is urging the Chief Judge to intervene in the reassignment of charge no: CR/MISC/W /34/17 so that either the OPD or the LAC could represent Mr. Ayo Aremu, who is spending 6 years in Kirikiri Maximum prison,” the letter concluded.
