The trial of Oluwaseun Osibanjo, the driver of the Lagos State Staff bus that collided with a moving train at the PWD rail-crossing in Ikeja, about two months ago, has fully commenced at the Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja.

The defendant, who was arraigned before Justice Oyindamola Ogala, is facing a 16-count charge, bordering on involuntary manslaughter and causing grievous harm preferred against him by the State Government.

At the arraignment, on Tuesday, the State’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Babajide Martins, told the Court that Osibanjo’s ignored the warning signals and drove into the path of an oncoming train.

He alleged that his negligence and action also caused the deaths of about six persons and injured over 10 other occupants of the bus.

Justice Ogala however remanded Osibanjo in prison, pending the filing and hearing of his bail application.

The driver, who works with the State Ministry of Transport, had earlier pleaded with the accident victims for forgiveness.

The driver told some family members that visited him at the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department, SCIID, that: “It is a pity this happened. I beg everyone affected to please forgive me in the name of God.”

He however blamed the cause of the accident on a mechanical fault, adding that, “It was not my fault. How could I have ignored warning signs? The bus had a mechanical fault.”

Meanwhile, some survivors from the accident have insisted that the 44-year-old driver had his earpiece on while driving and ignored the directive of the Flag Officers at the rail line.

The tragic incident had occured on March 9, 2023 at about 7:45am, a time usually term as a ‘rush-hour’ for salary earners in the commercial nerve centre of country.
